Well, after some good news about this year’s Iditarod, I guess it was inevitable there would be some bad news. According to the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, five-time Iditarod champion Rick Swenson, the “King of the Iditarod,” has withdrawn from the 2013 race, citing “personal reasons.”
The 62-year-old Swenson is the winningest musher in Iditarod history, with victories in 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982, and 1991. He is the only musher to win the Iditarod in three different decades.
He’ll be missed in this year’s race.
